To be fair I will mention they are using better materials then they did back then but it still has only one function you sleep in it. The most common of which weighs 10 lbs dose not compact small enough and still requires you to pack a cold weather jacket and trousers in cooler environments. The Special Operation Forces Parka Sleep System is a sleeping bag and parka combined into one item. This system replaces not only the Modular Sleep System but also the need for a cold weather parka and trousers. We need to use forward thinking when addressing our military personnel's need for a dependable sleep system and also dependable bivy wear for sedentary activity. Therefore combining the two not only makes perfect sense for warmth and functionality but also lightens the load and frees up valuable space in ones pack to make more room for other essential gear. The Special Operation Forces Parka Sleep System hereafter referred to as SOF/PSS is a 3 piece System which consists of a Parka Sleeping Bag a waterproof breathable Parka Bivy Bag and a stuff sack. The average weight of the complete 3 piece systems is between 3 and 6 lbs. The SOF/PSS is available in 3 lengths short, regular and tall. It is also available in 3 configurations. 1) A 3 Season Intermediate Parka Sleep System rated at 0 Degrees F 2) An Extreme Cold Weather Parka Sleep System rated at - 25 Degrees F 3) A super Light Parka Sleep System rated at 40 Degrees F. The SOF/PSS is currently available in Coyote Brown, and Alpha Green, Multicam will be available in the near future for special order. * NOTE: Temperature ratings given above for the SOF/PSS are approximate and at the time of this printing have not been tested in a DOD approved facility. Also these ratings will vary depending on the layers worn by the occupant and the occupant's tolerance to cold. MATERIALS: All materials are USA made and manufactured to military specifications. The Parka Sleeping Bag shell is made of Epic by Nextec Peak Fabric the same material as used on the Level 4 Wind Shirt of the PCU System. The insulation is Primaloft the same insulation used in the PCU and GEN III Systems Level 7 garments. The Parka Bivy Bag is made of Event fabric a light-weight highly waterproof breathable fabric which many Special Operators are already familiar with. The Parka Bivy Bag is universal and works with any of the 3 Parka Sleeping Bags. The Stuff Sack is made of Ripstop Nylon with Event Fabric at the bottom to aid in compacting the Parka Sleep System as small as possible by allowing the air to escape as it is compressed down. FEATURES: The SOF/PSS Parka Sleeping Bag Features a Mummy style sleeping Bag with a parka style hood with draw cords on each side and one in the rear of the hood, a center zipper and dual sliders for ease of egress and ventilation. The inside bottom of the bag features an abrasion resistant material to facilitate sleeping with boots on. Insulated Sleeves with wrist overs, hand warmer pockets with flap and Hook & Loop closure The SOF Parka Bivy Bag features a Hook & Loop sleeve closure with rain flap on each shoulder with two finger loops to pull the Hook & Loop open to facilitate using the sleeves. The sleeves feature wrist overs with thumb hole as well for ease of donning and doffing and weather protection. It also features a center zipper with dual sliders and Hook & Loop closure and rain flap the length of the bag and at the bottom as well for total waterproof protection. Each SOF Parka Sleeping Bag comes with an appropriate size stuff sack. STUFF SACKS The Stuff Sacks are available in three sizes Stuff Sack 1 a small stuff sack suitable for compacting the Super-Lite Parka Sleeping Bag and Parka Bivy Bag for carrying Stuff Sack 2 a medium size stuff sack suitable for compacting the Intermediate Cold Parka Sleeping Bag and Parka Bivy Bag for carrying. Stuff Sack 3 a large stuff sack suitable for compacting the Extreme Cold Weather Parka Sleeping Bag and Parka Bivy Bag for carrying. The SOF Parka Sleep System Super Light Has 1.8 oz of Primaloft insulation which produces a 40 degree F. Parka/Bag 35 Degrees with Parka Bivy Bag Cover.* The SOF Parka Sleep System Intermediate Cold has 4 oz of Primaloft insulation which produces a 0 degree F. Parka/ bag -5 degrees F with Parka Bivy Bag Cover.* The SOF Parka Sleep System Extreme Cold Weather has 6 oz of Primaloft which produces a -20 degree F. EASE OF USE: The SOF Parka Sleeping Bag is so easy to use you can go from basic Enhanced Mummy Bag Mode to Parka Mode in about 30 seconds. USE OF SYSTEM: When the SOF Parka Sleeping Bag is in its basic mode it is an enhanced Mummy Sleeping Bag with the sleeves folded behind the occupants shoulders inside the bag which seals out any draft. To convert the Sleeping Bag into a Parka the occupant sits up and proceeds to push their arms through the sleeves which are insulated as well with Primaloft and have (wrist overs) with a thumb hole which aids in donning and doffing and adds warm to the hands. Once the occupant has their arms through the sleeves they undo the Velcro at the bottom of the sleeping bag and put their legs out and proceed to stand up. Once standing the Occupant unzips the center zipper enough to reach down and grab the bottom of the sleeping bag folding it inward and raising it to their waist where it is secured with two barrel locks. The Parka Sleeping Bag is now in the Parka Mode and the individual can walk about freely. To convert the Parka back into a mummy sleeping bag just reverse the above steps and you are back in the mummy configuration. The occupant may also configure the Parka Sleeping bag so that they can sleep with their arms out in the sleeves and their feet enclosed in the sleeping bag. Occupants may also sleep with their boots on as the interior bottom of the sleeping bag is lined with a light weight abrasion resistant material. The above procedures also work when the SOF/PSS Parka Bivy Bag is being used over the Parka Sleeping Bag or the Parka Bivy Bag is being used on its own. The SOF/PSS has numerous configurations and uses only limited by the end users imagination. CARE OF SYSTEM: Each of the components of the SOF/PSS has a care and use label sewn onto the item. NOTE: All Parka Sleeping Bags, Bivy Bags and Stuff Sacks can be purchased separately or together as a system.
